“Original NASGI Tea Set returns to NASGI August 25th”
The Navy will be coming to Grosse Ile, MI on August 25th to present back to the Township a beautiful antique Silver Set engraved NASGI "Treasure" that once graced the Grosse Ile Pilot House Naval Officers' Quarters! The presentation will take place on the porch of the historical Grosse Ile Pilot House.
The Naval Air Base was opened from 1929- 1969 - President George Bush, Sr., Donald Rumsfeld and Bob Barker were all stationed at NASGI for a short time during their military careers.
After the Navy left Grosse Ile a silver tea set engraved “NASGI Treasure” was moved to the care of the Detroit Navy Reserve. However; this valuable piece of our Island’s history will return to its original home in a ceremony with the Navy.
The Navy will arrive at 10:00, the ceremony is set to begin at 11:00 with a Welcome from Township Supervisor Brian Loftus. The Naval Hymn will be sung by Sharon Tocco, a vocalist also contributing to the Second Annual NASGI Veterans Gala before the Navy unveils the "Silver Set" and presents it back to the Township of Grosse Ile.
For those in attendance wishing to stay afterwards there will be entertainment provided by Sharon Tocco and Barry VanEngelen, “The Guitar Guy”. Hot dogs, chips, and beverages will be available for purchase courtesy of the Knights of Columbus. The Grosse Ile Pilot House is located at 9645 Groh Road, Grosse Ile, MI 48138.
