GROSSE ILE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT

T-HANGAR SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

  1. A maximum of 2.5 gallons of fuel may be kept in the hanger if it is in an approved metal container. No paint, thinners, solvents or other flammable liquids may be stored in a hangar unless in an approved flammable liquid safety cabinet.
  2. A maximum of 24 unopened quarts of oil may be stored in the hangar, No waste oil may be stored in the hangar. Oily rags may be kept in the hangar only if in a metal container with a metal lid.
  3. The BOCA Code currently adopted by the Grosse Ile Township specifically limits T-Hangars to the storage of aircraft and related (nonflammable) parts, tools, equipment and supplies. However, a maximum of one automobile and one boat may be stored in the hangar if each item is in a "winterized" condition (i.e. the battery has been removed and the permanently installed fuel tanks are full).
  4. Electrical devices for heating aircraft engines or drying aircraft interiors may be left operational in the hangar when not attended as long as the device is directly connected to the wall socket (not through extension cords except to tannis heaters or equivalent) and does not exceed 600 watts. An operational refrigerator may be maintained in the hangar for the tenant's convenience if it is directly connected to a wall socket per code. No other electrical device may be left on and no extension cords may be left plugged into a wall socket while the hangar is unattended. No extension cords may be left on the floor while the hangar is unattended. No extension cords may be fastened to hangar walls or supports.
  5. No upholstered, wooden or plastic furniture may be kept in the hangar.
  6. No wooden lofts or permanent shelving are allowed in the hangar. Any such existing lofts or shelving must be removed.
  7. No open-flame space heating devices may be stored or used in a hangar.
  8. Except as identified above, no other personal non-aircraft items may be stored in the hangar.
  9. No fueling or defueling of any kind is allowed in the hangar.
  10. Exceptions may be permitted to these requirements by authorization of the Fire Marshall.

The Township of Grosse Ile currently operates under the 1993 BOCA codes. These safety standards are subject to amendment from the Grosse Ile Township Fire Marshal, the Grosse Ile Airport Commission and the Grosse Ile Building Department
