OVERVIEW/FACT
SHEET – AIRPORT INTERN POSITION (June 2006) This fact sheet is provided
to give potential applicants an overview of the position and help them
understand its scope and nature. Please read it carefully. The purpose of the
internship is twofold: to help us with tasks related to the operation,
maintenance, and administration of the Airport and Commerce Park, and to give a
deserving person the "foot-in-door" experience needed to proceed with
a career in airport management or public administration. The intern program at Grosse
Ile Municipal Airport has been quite successful in helping people break into the
airport management business. Since it began in early 2001, we have had five
interns (three men, two women), all of whom have been able to move into
operations/management positions at larger airports within four to fourteen
months of coming on board. Nominally, the internship is for one year, but
requests for extensions will be seriously considered. Of course, an intern who
successfully applies for another position before the end of the one-year term is
encouraged to take the position. The airport manager will assist with the
intern’s efforts to get a job elsewhere, including (but not limited to) resume
and cover letter preparation, and preparing for interviews. The position is
"at-will." The intern can be terminated at any time and/or the
position can be eliminated at any time, at the discretion of the Airport
Manager. Before beginning work, the intern will be required to pass a physical
exam, (including a drug test), and pass a driver’s records check and criminal
background check. Normal working hours for the
intern are 9 AM to 6 PM with an hour for lunch, five days a week.
The intern is expected to occasionally work at other times (nights
and weekends) for meetings, special events, and emergencies. For example, we
have a monthly Commerce Park Commission meetings, bi-monthly Airport Advisory
Committee meetings and quarterly Brownfield Commission meetings.
Attendance at an occasional Township Trustee meeting is also needed when
the Airport has an item on the agenda. Occasionally the intern may attend a
meeting of the Michigan Aeronautics Commission (held bi-monthly in Lansing and
other locations around the state). Because
the internship at this time is unpaid, part time employment will be considered.
The spring and summer are
especially busy times. Between the end of May and the middle of July the airport
hosts an Island Festival, an airshow, and a radio controlled jet meet. Our
airport construction projects are normally conducted during the summer also. We
also occasionally host events such as dances in our main hangar. Numerous other
events and incidents (aviation safety seminars, fly-ins, aircraft mishaps, etc)
also demand the intern’s attention. As I like to put it, there are numerous
opportunities to excel! The Airport is operated by
Grosse Ile Township. A seven-member Board of Trustees is the Township’s
governing body. A Township Manager works for the Board and directly supervises
the Township Staff (including the Airport Manager). Currently there are four
paid positions on the Airport Staff: one Manager, one Office Coordinator, and
two Maintenance personnel. Two seven-member commissions (The Commerce Park
Commission and the Airport Advisory Committee) appointed by (and responsible to)
the Board of Trustees, provides oversight of the marketing, economic
development, maintenance, and administration of the Airport and its Commerce
Park. The same Commission serves as
the Brownfield Authority with the Airport Manager as the Secretary. The Airport’s budget is
approximately $1 million. Revenues are generated mostly by rents and fees from
the Commerce Park, hangar rent, and fuel sales. . Important: If we select you for an interview, and you then
decide you do not want to go through the interview process, please let us
know as soon as possible. To obtain additional
information please call 734-675-0155 or email dthiel@grosseileairport.com.
Our contact information is also available on the airport web site. We will help
you as much as time will allow. If you are not able to contact us during normal
business hours, please let us know, and we will set a time/date to talk to you
in the evening or early morning. Good luck! Grosse Ile Municipal Airport GROSSE ILE TOWNSHIP JOB TITLE: AIRPORT
